LIGO - Virgo Collaboration

GW Open Data Workshop #3

May 26 - 28, 2020

Gravitational-Wave Open Data Workshop #3

Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo are now observing the gravitational-wave sky with unprecedented sensitivity. To date, there have been over 50 potential gravitational-wave transients observed, and planned detector upgrades are likely to accelerate the pace of discovery in the coming years. This new window on the universe is providing insights on a range of topics, including compact body populations, cosmology, and fundamental physics.

LIGO and Virgo strain data from past observation runs and data snippets around discoveries are made publicly available at gw-openscience.org, along with associated software libraries. The LIGO and Virgo collaborations are hosting an Open Data Workshop to facilitate working with these data products. This workshop is the third edition of a series that began in 2018. It is intended for scientists and students who wish to learn about using gravitational-wave data and software in order to conduct research of their own. The workshop will provide a mixture of lecture style presentations and hands-on programming exercises, using publicly available gravitational-wave data and specialized software tools.

Location

Due to the ongoing, worldwide outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), we have decided to hold this meeting remotely. This is a change from the previously announced location, and we appreciate your understanding as we adjust to the current conditions.

This meeting will take place remotely using zoom. Connecting instructions will be e-mailed to all registered participants in advance of the meeting. Participants are encouraged to test their connection, including any audio and video equipment, before the workshop dates, in order to help make the meeting work as smoothly as possible.

Registration

Advance registration for the workshop is required; attendance will be limited on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no fee to attend the workshop. Registration is now closed. A list of registered attendees may be seen on the participant list.

Please sign-up for the GWOSC e-mail list to be informed about future workshops.

Program

The program will include a mixture of lecture style presentations and hands-on programming exercises. For context, see programming from past workshops.

Data Challenge

Workshop participants are invited to participate in a Data Challenge to test the skills they have learned in the workshop. Participants may submit solutions as individuals or in teams of up to 3 people. Solutions are due at the start of the "Conclusion" session on Day 3 (May 28 at 8:00 AM Pacific).

Mentors

A great team of mentors is working hard to prepare the tutorials, and will provide help and guidance during the hands-on sessions.

Meet the mentors!
